Welcome to Mogtagtom's Painting gallery. As a painter Tomy uses traditional mediums for his works including watercolour, ink, and acrylic. His fantasy artwork combines his Yorkshire mining town upbringing with the glamour of art deco. Click on an image find out more.

Terracotta Time

It is a desert-like landscape akin to Monument valley, with huge pillars of terracotta rock seeming to be the ruins of some ancient bridge. As the towers descend into the distance the road being suspended in air curves upwards and towers toward a deep blue sky. A single star shines in the sky.

Constructing Futurism

Acrylic painting by Yorkshire artist Tomy Jenkins of Mogtagtom. The painting displays angular figures in a cubist style, though the overall style of the piece was inspired by Constructivism. A tall, faceless woman stands centrally wearing a pinafore and pleated skirt. Two figures, a male and female, face outwards at either side of the central woman. The figures hold a cascade of rhubarb, elderberries, mint leaves and strawberries. A third female is crouched and reaches her arm off of the canvas. A triangular shape suggests a roof behind the figures, and a chimney billows curls of smoke in bold shapes which descend down the side of the painting transforming into curls of butter. A nest on the roof holds a cracked egg and orange contents flow down the other side of the painting, splashing into the curls of butter at the bottom. Pots, jars and bottles stand above the egg and butter waves, where the central female emerges.

The painting borrows influence from the style of Russian constructivism and cubism and is composed of block shapes and angular, faceless figures. A man, three women and a boy remain central to the image all gesturing to some ailment they each have. The boy sits upon urns spouting ginger ale which floods the bottom of the canvas in sculpted orange waves. Hands reach into the canvas from each side holding various ingredients from honey to sugar, lemon and vinegar.

The acrylic painting is composed of a cool palette of blues, purples and mauve contrasting against fields in warm browns and lush green veg. The top centre of the image features a large bluish grey pit wheel on a backdrop of purple and lilac stylised clouds ascending from power station cooling towers. the wheel is connected by belts to a smaller pit wheel on the right which in turn connects to a smaller wheel of a sewing machine, and a wheel which is actually a Pontefract cake, a round liquorice confectionery, on the left. Central and interjecting the main pit wheel, a stylised, angular shaded woman sits at a sewing machine with blue hair, no facial features and a mauve dress. The fabric she sews is brown with a green hem and flows down from the machine draping to form a tilled field growing mint and wild strawberries. The fabric is parted like a curtain which forms a dark chasm of purples and black, and three men wearing hard helmets, mucky teal vests and carry snap tins can be seen, standing straight, side by side. In the field is a man wearing a brown flat cap, green waistcoat and dark green trousers. he's propping himself up on a garden fork and reaches out bearing an onion in his hand. Behind him the fields turn into hues of blue as they head into the distant and yield lines of rhubarb and liquorice plant. The piece was inspired by stories of Wakefield and Pontefract, mining towns in the fifties. The style of the piece was inspired by Russian Constructivism.

The World's a Stage

Inspired by the style of Alphonse Mucha, the painting depicts a white female queen, wearing white robes with one hand in the air and the other holding a staff. A white dove sits on top of the staff. The queen has wild ginger hair, wears a white masquerade mask and a silver tiara. The tiara is mirrored above her, framing the image. White roses in different stages of growth line one side of the image. At the bottom of the image is the text "Imperial" and in the upper right corner the text read "Arken" which is the name of the Queen.

A puppet of a jester sits in an open circus tent at the bottom of the painting and the tent is crowned with the bust of a nutcracker. Several other towers feature drawing influence from the coloured domed peaks of Moscow's Kremlin. A crescent moon has a clown-like face in the sky.

The System

A water-soluble pen and ink painting by Yorkshire artist Tomy Jenkins of Mogtagtom. The image depicts a skeletal female with an exposed rib cage and spinal column. Her mouth is open screaming and her eyes cloaked in a black mass that ascends above her head like billowing smoke. Hands grasp at her spine rising up from a black sea, trying to drag the figure down. Spiky protrusions and symbols intersect the figure or radiate from it. The image is an autobiographical representation of the artist's own battles with anxiety and depression.

A water-soluble pen and ink painting by Yorkshire artist Tomy Jenkins of Mogtagtom. The figure depicts a female emerging from the side of a building as if pulling herself through the brickwork. She wears a headdress of a sharp pointed skyscraper and plumes of smoke arise from pipes attached to her neck and shoulder. Her teeth are clenched and she has one mechanical eye which pierces the viewer with an unrivalled anger.

Her face is missing from the top lip upwards and replaced with a billowing hat. She has a sinister open mouth smile and flailing tongue. Down her back protrude seven pipes like those of a bagpipe and the figure reaches round to hold one with a cascade of water. Her dress is a sea of billowing tartan and other similar figures can be seen caressing themselves in the background.
