The Throne Room

Phase of the Harlequin

Watercolour

Watercolour and ink illsutration by Yorkshire illustrator Tomy Jenkins of Mogtagtom. The illustration depicts a colourful scene in a hallway with velvet red drapes and fancy plaster recesses. Front and centre is a robust lady with one arm in the air reaching toward a sock suspended on a fishing line. She wears pink voiles and tassels, costume jewellery and blonde hair in a elaborate do. She appears transfixed and joyous as she runs toward the floating sock. Behind a character sits in a vase holding ferns, another character, the mime, stands in a plaster recess holding a bow and arrow, statuesque in the pose of cupid. A third character, a female in a brown pencil skirt, red masquerade mask and flailing purple hair wields the fishing rod suspending the sock. She is running to keep up pace with the woman chasing her sock bait.

The image depicts a female figure in fairytale princess attire, levitating into the air, seemingly summoned or being abducted by a UFO, harlequin called the Pierrot. The landscape resembles a desert like the Arizona planes and grand canyon.

A fallen log and two mushrooms are turned into homes wielding little wooden doors. The colour palette is bold and vibrant of viridian greens, Prussian blues and deep reds.

The egg shell is red and rose pink in colour with a blue ribbon wrapped around its middle. Inside the egg, the home is split into 3 floors; an attic with a brass telescope looking out through the shell, a stone staircase skirting the inside of the shell leads to a livingroom, kitchen combo. Brass pans and irons hang from the wall in the kitchen while a wooden shaft climbs the middle of the room which acts as a support for the floor above and a cushioned seating area for the living room. The floor below is reached by a ladder where stone masks line the top of the walls. Stone columns descend down the walls below the masks and into a lake of calm, green water. A small gnome with a pointy red hat sits upon a wooden jetty, his rod casting a line into the lake.

The warm glow of sunset radiates in through three arched windows. All the children and the teacher wear masquerade masks and have a look of circus clowns about them. One boy sits in front of all the other children wearing blue, his attention offered in whole to the teacher's lesson, while the other children fidget and talk in the background.
